Elements of Usability Testing
There are many different types of usability testing, but the core elements in most usability tests are the facilitator, the tasks, and the participant.

Facilitator: Guides the session, explains tasks, and gathers insights from participants.
Tasks: Specific activities given to participants to perform with the product/service.
Participant: Represents the target user demographic, completes tasks, and provides feedback.
Together, they identify usability issues and improve the user experience.
Methods of Usability Testing
Moderated vs. Unmoderated
Moderated testing, whether in person or remote, involves a trained researcher guiding participants through the test, addressing queries, and conducting follow-up questions.
While moderated testing yields in-depth insights due to researcher-participant interaction, it can be costly to arrange (e.g., securing lab space, hiring trained staff, compensating participants).
In contrast, unmoderated tests lack direct supervision, often conducted remotely by participants in their own settings. It offers lower costs but may result in superficial participant responses and lacks the opportunity for follow-up questions.
Remote vs In-person testing
Remote usability tests are conducted online or via phone, while in-person testing involves the physical presence of a UX researcher/moderator
In contrast to remote tests, in-person testing offers additional insights by allowing researchers to observe and analyse participants’ body language and facial expressions. However, it typically requires more resources as it is costly and time-consuming, involving finding a suitable space, scheduling specific dates, and recruiting (and compensating) participants. Although remote testing may not delve as deeply into participants’ reasoning, it enables testing a larger and geographically diverse pool of people with fewer resources.

Keep usability test smooth by assessing user behaviour
Quantitative – time users take on a task, success and failure rates, effort (how many clicks users take, instances of confusion, etc.)
Qualitative – users’ stress responses (facial reactions, body-language changes, squinting, etc.), subjective satisfaction (which they give through a post-test questionnaire) and perceived level of effort/difficulty.
How to conduct usability testing? - A complete process
- Planning: In this phase, the objectives and scope of the usability test are defined. This includes identifying the goals of the test, determining the target audience and their characteristics, selecting appropriate methodologies, and designing tasks and scenarios. Additionally, logistical considerations such as budget, timeline, and resources are established during the planning phase.
- Recruit: The recruit phase involves selecting and recruiting participants who represent the target user demographic. Criteria for participant selection are based on factors such as age, gender, expertise, and familiarity with similar products or services. Recruitment methods may include outreach through user databases, social media, or recruiting agencies. Participants are typically screened to ensure they meet the desired criteria before being invited to participate in the test.
- Execution: During the execution phase, the usability test is conducted according to the predefined plan. This involves setting up the testing environment, briefing participants on the objectives and tasks, and facilitating the testing session. The facilitator guides participants through tasks, observes their interactions with the product or service, and collects qualitative and/or quantitative data. Any issues or challenges encountered during the testing session are noted for analysis and reporting.
- Data Analysis: In the data analysis phase, the collected data from the usability test is systematically analysed to identify patterns, trends, and insights. Qualitative data such as observations, feedback, and user comments are categorised and synthesised to uncover usability issues and areas for improvement. Quantitative data, if collected, is also analyzed to calculate metrics such as task success rates and completion times. The analysis phase helps to derive actionable recommendations for optimizing the user experience.
- Reporting : The reporting phase involves synthesizing the findings from the usability test into a comprehensive report. This report typically includes an overview of the objectives and methodology, a summary of key findings and insights, detailed descriptions of usability issues identified, and recommendations for design improvements. The report may also include visual aids such as graphs, charts, and screenshots to illustrate key points. The usability test report serves as a valuable resource for stakeholders, informing decision-making and guiding the iterative design process.
- Implementation Plan: Ideation team reviews the report and performs the severity classification workshop and strategizes the improvements in design and development. Based on issues mentioned in the report, issues are categorized as well as assigned with severity classification .i.e. Normal, important, critical.

- Booking a ride:
This is the primary functionality of the application that even if 100’s users are trying to book the ride at the same time, the user should be able to book the ride. - Types of ride:
The user should be able to view and book all the types of rides available starting from micro, mini, prime, Sweden, carpool, etc. The number of available seats in the ride is also displayed with the type of ride. - Estimated time of arrival:
While booking it should display the estimated time of arrival so that the user can decide between the different ride options available. - Estimated cost while booking the ride:
While booking it should display the estimated cost so that the user can book from the different ride options available. - Ride later option:
If the user wants to pre-book the ride, the person should be able to book a ride of personal desire. - Share ride option:
If the user has booked a ride for his friend and wants to share the ride details with his friend. The person should be able to share the ride details. - Adding different payments:
The user should be able to pay in all the modes. Like a credit card, debit card option, UPI, wallet, or cash payment. The application should ask for confirmation before saving the credit card, debit card credentials. - Customer support:
Users should be able to connect to customer service via call, email, or chat. Posting frequently asked questions will also help customers. It is also helpful in case if the person by mistake forgot any belongings, or if the driver has charged him incorrectly, also if the driver tried to misbehave or if the user wants to file a complaint or seek any kind of help. - Cancel the booked ride:
If the user booked a ride just by mistake and wishes to cancel, then the user should be able to cancel the booked ride. - Call the driver:
It may happen that the driver is not able to locate the rider at the pickup location, or the user is at the pickup location and not able to find the driver. This feature reduces confusion and saves time if the driver is not aware of the location, he can contact you and reach you easily.
